KEY MESSAGES
1. BE AWARE of the location, scale and predicted spread of fire activity.
Use the Fires Near Me website (https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/fire-information/fires-near-me) or App.
Remember CONDITIONS CAN CHANGE VERY QUICKLY.
Make sure you have a BUSHFIRE PLAN – for assistance see https://www.myfireplan.com.au/
As a last resort, during a bush fire, ASSEMBLE AT THE DESIGNATED NEIGHBOURHOOD SAFER PLACE (see below). This is not an evacuation centre, it is a place of relative safety in the event that you are not able to carry out other aspects of your plan safely.
NB If you park and lock your vehicle at the Neighbourhood Safer Place, please do not leave it unattended! It may need to be moved to allow access for fire-related vehicles and/or helicopters.
2. KEEP ASSET PROTECTION ZONES CLEAR
PLEASE don’t allow rubbish or objects (boats, caravans, blow up swimming pools etc) to encroach on asset protection zones that separate properties from the bush and allow vehicle access during fires. To check where your local APZs are, consult the preparation map for your village (see list below).
3. MAINTAIN YOUR PROPERTY
This includes keeping gutters clear, raking leaves and disposing of green waste.
Another very important aspect of property maintenance is to AVOID STORING THINGS UNDER HOUSES AND SHEDS.
If you have a house or shed on piers, keep the area underneath enclosed if you can, but the crucial message is do not store materials such as timber, sporting items, equipment etc in this area.
NEIGHBOURHOOD SAFER PLACE
Neighbourhood Safer Places are a place of last resort during a bush fire emergency. They are to be used when all other options in your bush fire survival plan can’t be put into action safely.
(from RFS website, more info at https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/plan-and-prepare/neighbourhood-safer-places).
The Neighbourhood Safer Place for the Red Head Villages is the Manyana Community Hall, corner at Yulunga Reserve
